How to Find Out About Your Court Date or Arraignment

Court dates are usually listed at the bottom of any citation or bail report notice. Upon release, you will be given an official bail report indicating your return date to court. To avoid penalties, arrive at Courthouse West by the time listed on your citation or bail report notice. Both you and your defense attorney must show up at the Courthouse West on the specified date.

Upon arraignment, you have the right to appear in court. Where you will be arraigned will depend on where you are charged and which government agency investigated the case.

At this hearing, the judge reads the criminal charges against the defendant, who will usually plead not guilty. Your attorney will be able to see the police report, and the judge will decide to either set bail and put you in custody or allow you to remain free during court proceedings.

The judge may release you based upon your promise to report for trial on the date scheduled. However, if the judge decides to put you in custody, you must post the specified bail amount before you can be released from custody. Failure to pay your bail would mean that you will remain in the County jail for the duration of your case.

If this is your first time being prosecuted, you will probably be nervous. Hiring a misdemeanor attorney to represent you is in your best interest. An attorney will explain your rights to you in detail and can increase your chances of convincing the judge to allow you to remain free during your court proceedings.

What Security Measures Can I expect at the Courthouse?
